Accuweather meteorologist Tyler Roys told Daily Star Online cool air from Canada and Greenland is said to be driving the cruel conditions.
He said: “The cold air that will be moving into the UK for the end of this week will be coming from Canada and Greenland, which keep temperatures a 2-3C below their normal highs.
“This will also allow for snow to mix in with rain in some of the lower terrain of northern England and Scotland, while in the higher terrain it will be mainly snow.”
Emma Sharples, meteorologist at the Met Office, said “we could get some blizzard type conditions, especially at height”.
She added that thundersnow “is definitely possible”.
